Where the Wall Begins

by Andy Griffin

Where The Wall Begins was performed towards the end of July 2001. The Tyne and Wear Museum service invited the group to create a play focusing on Segedunum and the site of the Roman fort at Wallsend.

Andy Griffin: "I am fascinated by Segedunum and the events which took place on this small but very significant plot of land. Apart from the historic Roman settlement it was the scene of a terrible explosion in 1835 when three-quarters of the 102 fatalities were boys under the age of seventeen. On the edge of the site stands the Swan Hunter Shipyard. It was from this slipway that the Mauretania, the finest and fastest ocean-going liner of its day, was built and launched by the magnificent workforce. It will be quite a challenge to dramatise these momentous events into an hour-long entertainment."

Where The Wall Begins portrays our local history through words and music, humour and tragedy, and the talented Tynemouth Pageant Players have the expertise and experience to make the past come to life.
